Avodart
(Dutasteride) is a new FDA approved medication
for treating BPH (Benign Prostate Hyperplasia
).Dutasteride
is the first dual inhibitor of the 5-alpha-reductase
iso-enzymes types I and II and a potent
inhibitor of dihydrotestosterone ( DHT
) production.
The average daily dose
of Dutasteride used in the previous BPH
studies was 0.5 mg. However the drug
is not approved to treat AGA and the
most likely dose to treat AGA successful
would be around 2.5 mg daily. As a re-imported
and therefore prescription free drug
Avodart costs more than $ 375 for a 100
caps. bottle ( 0.5 mg each ) Taking
up to 5 capsules a day would add up to
enormous monthly costs and the benefit
compared with the daily intake of 5 mg
finasteride is probably not worth the
money. Keep in mind that reducing DHT
stops hairloss but has probably only
a minor influence in regrowing hair.
We do not think that GSK will ever proceed
with an approval as an AGA drug.
But we do not think that
a 90.2 % serum dihydrotestosterone
reduction is necessary for AGA sufferer.
It is much more important to reduce DHT
in the scalp and sebaceous glands. According
to the Rittmaster study 0.5 mg
Dutasteride is able to reduce scalp DHT
by 54 % and 82 % with a 2.5 mg dose.
Dutasteride is an ideal
substance to be used as a topical product.
It is our conclusion that a topical liposomal
dutasteride preparation in combination
with oral finasteride will show the best
results for AGA sufferer. As
said before Type 1 5-AR ( but also
caspase ! ) is located in the sebaceous
glands. Steering a superior Type 1 inhibitor
into the sebaceous glands could significantly
reduce 5-AR and caspase activity. Liposomes
are able to specifically target the sebaceous
glands and deliver
drugs to the pilosebaceous unit especially
when used with the Dermaroller.
